How to Access Psilocybin Services in Oregon

Psilocybin, a psychedelic compound, occurs naturally in over 200 species of mushrooms and has been used for ceremonial and spiritual purposes by certain indigenous and tribal communities for many centuries. Psilocybin services became an option for legal therapeutic use in Oregon following the approval of Measure 109 in 2020. The state’s psilocybin law allows licensed service centers to offer supervised psilocybin experiences under the guidance of trained facilitators. Adults aged 21 or older can legally access psilocybin services or treatment via guided sessions handled by licensed psilocybin facilitators at licensed psilocybin service centers in Oregon.

What are Psilocybin Services in Oregon?

Psilocybin services, as approved in Oregon, refer to three sessions provided to adults of legal age as therapy at licensed psilocybin service centers.

Preparation Session

At the preparation stage, clients seeking psilocybin services are required to participate in an intake session with a licensed facilitator. In this session, the licensed facilitator initiates a discussion with the client to understand their mental health history and expectations of the use of psilocybin. The facilitator will review the informed consent document with the client and explain the responsibilities of both parties and the potential effects of psilocybin. If a client is found to be experiencing an inclination to harm themselves or others, or have been diagnosed with active psychosis earlier, they will be restricted from proceeding to the next stage. Also, a client who has taken lithium in the last 30 days is ineligible to use psilocybin services in Oregon.

Also, the licensed psilocybin facilitator will create a safety and support plan, which is aimed at identifying coping strategies and support systems that may be required during the course of the services. A transportation plan will also be crafted at this session that the client must follow after completing the administration session.

Responses provided on the Client Information Form will indicate whether the client is ineligible for psilocybin services or requires the presence of an authorized support person during their administration session.

The goal of the preparation session is for the client to determine whether they intend to proceed to the next stage - administration session, and the facilitator to also decide if they can offer the requested services. Licensed facilitators retain the right to decline services to any client, regardless of the circumstances.

Administration Session

The administration stage is where a client consumes psilocybin under the supervision of a licensed psilocybin facilitator at an approved service center. Once the preparation session has been completed and a client is determined to be eligible to use psilocybin services, a licensed facilitator may proceed to provide the agreed dosage in a controlled setting. The facilitator will be present throughout the experience to ensure safety and respond to concerns that may arise. In order to ensure that the client is stable, they must remain at the service center for a specified minimum duration based on their dosage.

Integration Session

After the administration session in Oregon psilocybin therapy, a client is required to participate in an integration session to reflect on their experiences. A licensed psilocybin facilitator will follow up with the client within 72 hours of the completion of the administration session to review their safety and support plans, the administration session, and other necessary information. During this session, a client may also get referrals to psilocybin community resources and peer support networks.

Who is Eligible for Psilocybin Services in Oregon?

In order to be eligible to use psilocybin services or psilocybin therapy in Oregon, you must be aged 21 or older. Service centers and facilitators licensed under the psilocybin program are required to verify the age of their clients by requesting valid government-issued identification before providing services. No Oregon residency requirement is mandated before you may legally use psilocybin in the state.

Also, while a medical prescription is not required to use psilocybin, a licensed psilocybin facilitator at the licensed psilocybin service center will conduct an assessment to determine if you have suicidal inclinations, a history of mental health issues, or have recently used lithium. If you have or are undergoing therapies that may interact negatively with psilocybin, you will be restricted from using psilocybin at the service center.

Psilocybin may only be administered at licensed service centers. These centers are regulated by the OHA and must meet specific standards for safety, security, and client care. Facilitators are not permitted to provide psilocybin services independently or in private homes.

Do You Need a Prescription to Get Psilocybin in Oregon?
